My advisor from Berkeley, Carla D’Antonio, visits CU

This week, I was very excited to have my undergraduate advisor, Dr. Carla D’Antonio, visit CU and speak in our weekly colloquium series. It was great to watch Carla interact with all of my friends and colleagues here at CU because she is so friendly and so are we! I think everyone had a good time. I know I did. It was a lot of work to organize her schedule and get food for the reception, but it was well worth it. It reminded me that science can be a highly social activity and that it is not all just staring at my computer and hacking out analyses and papers. Though it is that too of course.
Carla’s talk focused on a synthesis of her work on several invaders including iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis) seen in the poster above, fire-prone C4 grasses in Hawaii, and the European annual grasses in California. Using an IPAT-type formula, Carla evaluated the ecosystem impacts of invaders in light of their abilities to increase their numbers and/or alter ecosystem function. It was great to catch up with Carla, get good advice from her, and see what she has been working on.
