I HAD A WONDERFUL BERKELEY MOMENT LAST THURSDAY. I had just ordered one and a half steaming pies from The Cheeseboard on Shattuck Ave. As I waited for Andrea and Ian to walk back from Safeway, I sat at a metal sidewalk table and watched a talented jazz pianist and drummer entertain the out-the-door line with jazz standards like "Nice work if you can get it" and some original creations. Cooperative pizza is delicious and so is the Berkeley lifestyle!

But I was in Berkeley for just a short while. This is my third summer doing research in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. I have a few photos from familiar places I've revisited:

I've spent a lot of time by myself in the field, at the White Mountain Research Station, and driving around our Golden State. My solitary mullings excited me about all of the wonderful time I spent in Berkeley the last four years, about the rest of my travels this summer (Sequoia Lake, Irvine, Georgia, Ohio, Boundary Waters), about the rest of my life, really. Conventional wisdom says college is the best four years of your life; to that I say unscrew the locks!
