Moorea is a high (1207 m) volcanic island in the Society Islands chain. It is 17 kilometers across and has 12,000 residents, most of whom live on the coast. Originally a conical volcano, the center of Moorea has collapsed and eroded out toward two bays leaving two connected central valleys surrounded by a ridge of high mountains rising up from the coast.
