Bill's experiment examined the effects of nitrogen deposition on the tundra vegetation. Due to more concentrated industrial activity in Europe, nitrogen deposition rates are higher than in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The plot in this photograph was fertilized with phosphorus and shows a clear increase in productivity. The plots with nitrogen fertilizer did not show a similar increase, suggesting that this ecosystem is nitrogen-saturated, probably due to the high deposition rates.
