By my estimate, some sections of the meadow had 50-100 grasshoppers per square meter. The overwhelmed third trophic level failed to protect the meadow's grasses, sedges and rushes. Grasshoppers nibbled them to stubs like this rush. Combined with low snow and rainfall, it was an unusual field season.
